Axehead
Add to album

This bronze axehead was found at Clunas in Moray. It dates from around 1500 to 1150 BC.

The narrow-bladed axehead has cast flanges with inturned wings. A slight step serves as a stop-ridge, designed to stop the axehead from slipping sideways in the haft. Axeheads of the form are found primarily in northeastern Scotland.

Scottish axeheads with cast flanges vary greatly in their form, size and decoration. Regional styles can be identified, suggesting that axeheads were were probably made in a number of places.
