Axehead or chisel
Add to album

This small bronze axehead or chisel was found at Premnay in Aberdeenshire. It dates from between 2250 and 1900 BC.

The sides of the long, narrow axehead or chisel have been hammered to create flanges.

The form of flat chisels may have derived from narrow axeheads, and in some cases it is difficult to distinguish between the two. They were specialist woodworking tools, which were prestigious and valuable.
