This red earthenware cup was probably made at Alloa Pottery in Clackmannanshire. It dates from the 1890s.

The motto on the front of the cup reads 'Mak' yersel' at hame'. The base is impressed 'Shearer/Glasgow'. Shearer was a retail company which ordered large quantities of pottery from the Alloa Pottery.

Alloa was an important coal mining centre, and a pottery was established by the 1790s to take advantage of the abundant fuel and locally available clay. In its heyday the pottery was said to make 40,000 teapots a week. It finally closed in 1907.
