This transfer-printed earthenware soup plate was exported to South East Asia by the Glasgow potters, J. and M.P. Bell and Company. It dates from between 1842 and 1880.

The pattern, which was also made by other potteries, is called 'ALHAMBRA'. The centre design has an eight-pointed star of leaves within a circle. The border consists of scallop-edged panels surrounded by scrolls.

Bells started exporting by the 1860s. Their trade with South East Asia was particularly important.
