This transfer-printed earthenware soup plate was exported to South East Asia by the Glasgow potters, J. and M.P. Bell and Company. It dates from between 1842 and 1880.

The pattern of this plate is called 'SPORTING SUBJECT'. The centre shows four huntsmen and their hounds under trees with mountains in the background. The border pattern consists of roses against a blue edge.

Bells started exporting by the 1860s. Their trade with South East Asia was particularly important.
