Soup plate

This transfer-printed earthenware soup plate was made by the Glasgow potters, J. and M.P. Bell and Company. Dating from between 1842 and 1880, the plate was exported to South East Asia and collected there.

The pattern is called 'JAPAN'. The centre shows an arch of 'honeycomb' pattern scrolls through which is seen pagodas and a junk. The border design consists of groups of flowers, foliage motifs and 'Greek key' pattern.

Bells were exporting pottery in large quantities during the second half of the 19th century.
