Soup plate (detail)
Add to album

This detail shows the mark of the Glasgow potters, Robert Cochran & Company. It is on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware soup plate which dates from the second half of the 19th century. The plate was exported to South East Asia.

The mark includes the company's name 'COCHRAN & Co. St. ROLLOX/GLASGOW' and the pattern name 'JAPAN'.

This plate is one in an extensive collection of Scottish plates found in the bazaars and markets of Java, Sumatra and Borneo, areas for which they were undoubtedly produced.
