Plate, with photograph of Edward VIII

This English white glazed porcelain souvenir plate is transfer-printed with a photograph of Edward VIII. It dates from around 1937.

The inscription on banners underneath the king's head reads, '12th May/CORONATION/1937'. The base is stamped with the maker's initials, 'TL & K'.

Edward VIII was king of the United Kingdom from 20 January to 10 December 1936 when he abdicated in order to marry Wallis Simpson of the United States. He was the only British sovereign ever voluntarily to resign the crown.
