Tureen (detail)

This detail shows the mark of the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Company. It is on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware soup tureen which dates from between 1842 and 1880.

There were many variations in Bell's marks. This one consists of a shield with the pattern name 'ITALIAN/LAKES' and the company initials 'J. & M.P.B. & Co' in the centre. The shield is decorated with a garland, ribbons and flowers.

This company, which became one of the biggest and best known potteries in Scotland, was founded by the brothers John and Matthew Perston Bell and was in production by 1842. The Glasgow Pottery, or 'Bells' as it was more commonly known, produced a wide range of wares.
