Bowl

This white glazed earthenware bowl dates from the second half of the 19th century. The base is stamped in black with a crossed rifle and sword and the letters, '-C./V.P.', possibly for Robert Cochran's Verreville pottery in Glasgow.

The bowl has a bold pattern of red flowers and green leaves. The flowers and leaves have been painted on before glazing and are interspersed with groups of small blue sponge-printed flowers.

Pottery has been made in Scotland since prehistoric times. It was not until the middle of the 18th century that domestic pottery began to be mass-produced on an industrial scale. From about 1750 until the 1930s potteries produced utilitarian and decorative wares for home and foreign markets.
