Add to album

This unmarked brown glazed redware saut (Scots for 'salt') bucket is said to have been used in the Dalbeattie area in Dumfries & Galloway for storing preserved eggs. It dates from the mid 19th century

The bucket is of traditional shape with sides rising from a circular base to form an enclosed domed top.

Salt was one of Scotland's oldest manufacturing industries and was exported as early as the Middle Ages. Several places on the coast of the Firth of Forth made salt. The name 'pan' derives from salt pans.
