Snuffers

Snuffers are used to trim or cut off the charred end of a candle wick. These brass snuffers are from Achallader in Argyllshire. They were made in the early 19th century, probably on mainland Europe.

The scissors-type snuffers have a pointed oval box into which the end of the wick is transferred when it is cut off. The lid of the box is decorated in relief with a winged head, a lion's head, a profile bust in a roundel and two male supporters.
