Candle mould
Add to album

This double candle mould dates from the 18th or early 19th century. It is made of tin.

The candle mould consists of two cylinders with shaped ends. There is a handle to allow the mould to be held for the pouring and hardening process, and a generous pouring tray. This tray enabled the wax to be poured into the mould quickly, before it began to harden, and ensured the minimum of waste.

The candle wicks would first have been dropped into each mould through the hole in the top. The wicks would then have been held in place while the wax was poured in. When the wax dried it shrank slightly, allowing the candles to be easily removed from the moulds.
