found at West Linton, Peeblesshire
This sandstone candle stand was found in 1880 in a churchyard at West Linton in Peeblesshire. It is roughly cubical with a conical hole in the top. It looks medieval but could equally be from the 16th or 17th century and have been used in a craftsman's workshop where its advantage of solidity and stability (in contrast to the usual style of candleholder) would serve to lessen the risk of fire.
