Candlestick

This brass candlestick dates from the early 18th century.

The stem of the candlestick has two moulded collars with a vertical slit between them with a lifter moved by a round knob. The lifter is used to push the candle up in the socket of the candlestick as it burns down. This is a simple safety device to avoid the dangers inherent in a top-heavy candle when burning.
