Splint holder

This splint holder comes from Greenbog at Grange in Banffshire. It dates from the 18th century. Made of wrought iron, it would have held a lighted splint of wood and would have been attached to the wall or a block of wood. It is adjustable, so that the field of light can be moved.

Splints of bog wood were particularly valued as a light source. Bogs were searched for wood beneath the surface using metal poles.
