Mug

This pewter half pint mug was made in the mid 19th century, probably in Edinburgh.

The straight-sided mug has a moulded base and a decorative handle with a fish tail. Between two horizontal bands, one side is engraved 'I.C. McPHERSON / 289 CANONGATE', the name and address of a former owner. The other side has a five pointed shape featuring a crown, a castle, 'V.R.' (for Victoria Regina [Queen Victoria]) and the excise mark '1868'. Both sides are stamped '1/2 PINT'.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
