This pewter pint mug was made in the early 19th century by Robert Whyte, a prolific pewterer based in Edinburgh's Cowgate. Whyte became a freeman of the Incorporation of Hammermen of Edinburgh in 1805.

The mug is marked with the maker's name and, on the side, the excise marks for the county of Edinburgh.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
