This pewter measure for an Imperial half-gill dates was made around 1825, probably in Edinburgh.

The baluster measure has an embryo shell thumb-piece and excise marks for Edinburgh. It is stamped 'R.W.D.G.' for Robert Wright, Dean of Guild. There is no maker's mark.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
