This pewter measure for a Scots half-gill dates from the first half of the 19th century. It is a Glasgow-type of measure, pear-shaped, with a domed lid. It is inscribed '1 glass' (equivalent to a half gill Scots) on top of the lid. There is no maker's mark.

Pear-shaped pewter measure of Glasgow type with single domed lid, a one glass measure equal to a half Scots gill, 1800 - 1850

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
