Measure

This pewter measure for a Scots gill dates from the first half of the 19th century. It is a Glasgow-type of measure, pear-shaped, with a domed lid. It has an 1869 excise mark and is inscribed 'Two glass' (equivalent to 1 gill Scots) on top of the lid. It has no maker's mark.

Pear-shaped pewter measure of Glasgow type with single domed lid, a two glass measure equal to one gill Scots, no maker's marks, with 1869 excise mark, 1800 - 1850

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
