This pewter measure for an Imperial gill dates from the first half of the 19th century. It is an Aberdeen-type of measure, baluster-shaped, with no lid. It has no maker's mark.

The measure has excise marks for Aberdeen. Pricked on the side are the initials of a former owner, 'WL'.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
