Measure

This pewter measure for half a 'mutchkin' (a quarter Scots pint) dates from the late 18th century. It has no maker's marks.

The baluster measure has a flat lid, an S-scroll handle and an 'embryo shell' thumb-piece. The top of the lid is inscribed 'J.G.', the bottom of the measure, 'I.G. 1826'. The initials are those of former owners.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
