Ladle

This ladle made of bird cherry wood was found in or beside a peat bank at Bragar on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It was originally thought to be much older, but has been radiocarbon dated to between 150 and 200 years ago.

The ladle was carved from one piece of roundwood, split in half. There is minor damage to the bowl.

The ladle probably belonged to a 19th century peat cutter. Many other objects found in peat have, however, proved to be much older. Radiocarbon dating is usually the only way of dating many of the organic finds from peat.
