Add to album

This earthenware jug was made at David Methven & Sons' pottery at Kirkcaldy in Fife. It dates from the 1850s.

The jug is transfer-printed with a picture of a sailor returning from his family. An angel is looking over scene and holding a banner with the pattern name 'Peace`. The pattern and the 'Peace' celebrates the end of the Criman War in 1856.

The town of Kirkcaldy on the north shore of the Firth of Forth was one of the major centres of Scottish pottery production. In the second half of the 19th century it had four separate factories.
