This Weymss Ware spill vase was made in the early 20th century at Robert Heron & Sons' pottery at Kirkcaldy in Fife.

The vase is hand-painted with a rookery and windmills in black and is marked 'Earlshall'. The pattern on the vase was designed specially for sale at fairs held at Earlshall Castle at Leuchars in Fife and for use in the castle.

The home of R. W. Mackenzie, Earlshall Castle had been restored by the architect Robert Lorimer in the 1890s.
