Centrepiece, with view of Walter Scott Monument, Edinburgh

This glass centre-piece was made in around 1870, possibly at Bathgate Glassworks in West Lothian. It is engraved with a view of the Walter Scott Monument in Edinburgh. The engraving was probably done by an Italian or Bohemian employee of the glassworks.

After Walter Scott's death in 1832, a public subscription was raised to build an appropriate monument for the 'Wizard of the North'. Designed by George Meikle Kemp, it was built in Princes Street in Edinburgh between 1840 and 1846.
