Book of sacred poetry, carried by Dr John Rae

This book of sacred poetry is part of the collection of the Arctic Explorer, Dr John Rae. The book was given to Dr Rae by Miss Franklin, daughter of Sir John Franklin, an explorer who went missing along the Arctic coast during an expedition in 1845.

Book of sacred poetry given to John Rae by Miss Franklin, daughter of Sir John Franklin: Scottish, Midlothian, Edinburgh, William Oliphant & Sons, 19th century

Dr Rae used his understanding of the Inuit ways to discover Franklin's fate. During his 1853-4 expedition along Canada's northern coastline, he encountered Eskimos who knew where Franklin's ships had been abandoned.
