Incense game on stand (detail, opened out)

Incense game made of lacquered wood with bronze incense burner. A river and maple leaves design in sprinkled gold and silver with a hiramakie landscape design on top. Various incenses are burnt in and the aim is to guess which is the guest incense.

This incense game has a stand with a tray on top, and two drawers in the base. A double layered box with cover contains three small narrow incense boxes in the lower layer. An incense burner of lacquered wood lined in bronze is stored on the stand.

The incense game was bought with eleven other Japanese objects at the Philadelphia Exhibition in 1876 by Thomas Archer, director of this museum from 1860-1885 who helped set up the above.
