This is the reverse of a bronze medal commemorating Sir Walter Scott. Dating from 1824, the medal was made by W.Wyon.
The reverse depicts two female figures, one seated, one standing. Surrounding them is the text, 'Truth Severe in Fairy Fiction Dressed'.
Influential throughout Europe and America, Scott is known as the father of the historical novel. Born in Edinburgh in 1771, he trained as a lawyer but was drawn to writing. His first major publication was 'The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border' in 1802-3.
