Jug, made at Kirkcaldy, Fife
Add to album

This earthenware jug was made in the late 19th century at David Methven & Sons' pottery at Kirkcaldy in Fife.

The white glazed jug has a bulbous body, a lipped spout and a simple applied handle. It is marked 'Auld Heather Ware' and is painted and sponged on the body with flowers and foliage. This type of decoration was marketed under several different names.

The town of Kirkcaldy on the north shore of the Firth of Forth was one of the major centres of Scottish pottery production. In the second half of the 19th century it had four separate factories.
