Plaque

This earthenware plaque dates from the 19th century. It is from a domestic water closet from a house in Haddington in East Lothian.

The small oval plaque is transfer-printed in red. It bears the words 'Silent / "Edina" / Pat No 6716'.

In the 19th century, the water closet, with its water-flushed sewage, gradually replaced the insanitary earth closet, waste from which had to be dumped in the street.
