Small wooden cup

This small wooden cup was found in Shetland. It is an example of a simple, everyday vessel, used sometime between 340 and 600 AD. The cup is incomplete on one side.

Small wooden cup from Shetland

From the early historic period, vessels ranged from very simple objects, such as this simple wooden cup, to elaborate and precious drinking vessels meant for feasts. Wooden vessels such as this one only survive where conditions are favourable.
