Trade token (obverse), Farthing, of Perth
Add to album

This is the obverse of a copper farthing trade token of Perth. Dated 1798, the token was designed by Menzies and manufactured by Kempson. The die-sinker was Willets.

The obverse depicts an ancient tower with ships berthed at a quay. Underneath is the inscription, 'MONKS TOWER'. The surrounding text reads 'PERTH FARTHING 1798'.

Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued to ease the shortage of small change. The contemporary fascination with tokens resulted in them becoming collectors' items. Some tokens were issued purely for collecting.
