Trade token (obverse), Halfpenny, of David Peters, Perth
Add to album

This is the obverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of David Peters of Perth. Dated 1797, the token was manufactured by Lutwyche. The die-sinker was Westwood.

The obverse depicts a spirit still - the apparatus used to produce alcohol. The surrounding text reads 'PAYABLE AT DAVID PETERS WINE & SPIRIT SHOP.'

Five hundredweight of these tokens were struck. Circulated locally, trade tokens could be used to buy goods or redeemed for regal coinage. They were also an ideal way for a company to advertise its wares.
