Add to album

This is the obverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of Patrick Maxwell, a grocer and spirit dealer in Perth. Dated 1797, the token was manufactured by Kendrick.

The obverse depicts a hank of yarn and a bale of flax, representing the linen trade of Perth. The date is split on either side of the yarn - 17 to the left and 97 to the right. The surrounding text reads 'PERTH HALFPENNY'.

Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued. Tokens varied in quality from crude lead discs stamped with initials to elaborate pieces of craftwork from the die-sinkers with depictions of industrial or commercial scenes.
