This is the obverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of E Campbell, a tobacconist in Edinburgh. Dated 1796, the token was manufactured by James of London.

The obverse depicts a the head of a Turk. He is wearing a turban and smoking a pipe. The surrounding text reads 'PAYABLE AT CAMPBELL'S SNUFF SHOP'.

Tobacco taking was popular in Scotland from the mid-17th century. Scots became addicted to it in all its forms, whether by smoking, chewing or snuffing. Much of the tobacco was grown in Turkey.
