Trade token (obverse), Penny, of Paisley, Renfrewshire
Add to album

This is the obverse of a copper penny trade token of Paisley in Renfrewshire. Dated 1798 and designed by R Boog Junior, this private token is a fine example of the die-sinker's art.

The obverse depicts a bishop wearing a mitre and holding a pastoral staff. Shields of arms are to his left and right and below. The surrounding text reads 'PAISLEY PENNY/ARMS 1798'.

Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued to ease the shortage of small change. The contemporary fascination with tokens resulted in them becoming collectors' items. Some tokens were issued purely for collecting.
