Trade token (obverse), Halfpenny, of Thomas Scott, Gatehouse, Kirkcudbrightshire
Add to album

This is the obverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of Thomas Scott of Gatehouse in Kirkcudbrightshire. Dated 1793, the token was manufactured by Waring. The die-sinker was Davies.

The obverse depicts a griffin - a mythical animal with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion. The surrounding text reads 'GATEHOUSE HALFPENNY'.

In the second half of the 18th century, the government's failure to issue adequate small change resulted in traders and companies issuing their own token coinage. Circulated locally, these tokens could be used to buy goods or redeemed for regal coinage.
