Trade token (obverse), Halfpenny, of Mackintosh, Inglis & Wilson, Inverness
Add to album

This is the obverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of Mackintosh, Inglis & Wilson of Inverness. The token dates from 1793.

The obverse depicts a rose and thistle united with the surrounding text, 'INVERNESS HALFPENNY'.

In the second half of the 18th century, the government's failure to issue adequate small change resulted in traders and companies issuing their own token coinage. Circulated locally, these tokens could be used to buy goods or redeemed for regal coinage.
