Trade token (obverse), Penny, of Dundee, Angus

This is the obverse of a 1798 copper penny trade token of Dundee in Angus. This rare private token was designed by James Wright Junior.

The obverse depicts the bust of Admiral Lord Duncan with the surrounding text, 'DUNDEE PENNY/1798/ADML. LD. DUNCAN BORN HERE 1731. DEFEATD. THE DUTCH FLEET 1797'.

Admiral Adam Duncan joined the navy in 1746 at the age of fifteen. He became an admiral in 1795 and was Commander-in-Chief of the North Sea from 1795-1801, defeating the Dutch fleet off the coast of Holland in 1797.
