Trade token (obverse), Halfpenny, of Smith & Wilson, Brechin, Angus
Add to album

This is the obverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of Smith and Wilson of Brechin in Angus. The token is dated 1801.

The obverse has a view of a church surrounded by the text, 'PAYABLE BY SMITH AND WILSON'. Whilst this building is described as a parish church, it is in fact a cathedral. It stands above the South Esk river and dates from the 13th century.

It has been estimated that between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued. Although some pennies were produced, the tokens were issued mainly in farthing or halfpenny denominations.
