This scoop made from a shell was found in a midden, a large refuse pile which included tools, jewellery and other objects, excavated at Cnoc Coig on Oronsay in the Inner Hebrides. It was used sometime between 6000 and 3500 BC.

The earliest inhabitants in Scotland moved around the landscape, carrying their tools for gathering, fishing and hunting with them, or making others from local resources. The site of Cnoc Coig was visited often, mainly in the autumn.
