Iron object, possibly a pen nib

This iron object, possibly a pen nib, was found at the site of the Roman outpost fort at Strageath in Perthshire. It was used between 140 and 165 AD.

Pen-nib from Strageath, Perthshire, 140 - 165 AD

Brought to Scotland by the Romans, writing was vital to the bureaucracy created by the army. It was usually made by pen and ink on thin leaves of wood, or by a stylus on wax and wooden tablets.
