Strap mount

This strap mount, coated with silver or tin to give a shiny appearance, was found at the site of the Roman outpost fort at Strageath in Perthshire. It was used on a horse harness of an auxiliary cavalryman.

Silvered strap mount from Strageath, Perthshire, 80 - 165 AD

The harnesses of Roman cavalrymen were decorated with a range of mounts and pendants. Some of the finer examples, such as this one, were probably used in tournaments or ceremonies rather than fighting.
