Sword pommel
Add to album

This bronze sword pommel was found at Culbin in Moray. It was used sometime between 600 and 800 AD.

Although somewhat similar to Anglo-Saxon and Continental pommels, this example is without exact parallel and is probably Pictish. It is decorated with interlace ornament.

Warfare was a regular part of life in the first millennium. Pictish weapons are depicted on sculptured stones, some of which show large battle scenes. Weapons such as swords were not only practical, but also a way of showing status.
