VIitrified rock

This piece of vitrified rock (rock which has been melted) was found at Lochan an Gour in Argyll. It is from a rampart which was burned, the heat so intense it melted the rock, sometime between 700 and 0 BC.

Two pieces of vitrified rock, from Lochan an Gour, Argyll, 700 BC - 0

Before around 700 BC, undefended settlements were the norm in Scotland. After that time, however, settlements surrounded by banks or ditches, and hillforts became common. Many had timber or stone and timber ramparts.
