This mount, perhaps used as a fitting on a cart, was found at the site of the Roman fort at Strageath in Perthshire. It was used sometime between 140 and 165 AD.

The mount is in the shape of a griffin, a mythical beast which had an eagle's head, lion's body and wings.

Transport has always been a way of showing off or parading social position. Roman carts and chariots were sometimes decorated with ornamented metal strips and mounts. The horses drawing them had equally fine decoration.
