Paddle

This wooden paddle was found at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire. It was used between 590 and 630.

Almost all of the end of the paddle is preserved. It is little different from modern examples.

The seas and waterways around Scotland have made contact easier rather than acting as a barrier. Boats were also used for transport on inland rivers. Paddles such as this are rarely preserved but must have been common from an early period.
