Grinding bowl (Piece)

This piece of a limestone grinding bowl, also known as a mortarium, was found at the site of the Roman fort of Cardean in Perthshire. It was probably made of Purbeck limestone, obtained from south-west England, and used at the fort between 82 and 87 AD.

Portion of limestone mortar from Cardean, Perthshire, 82 - 87 AD

The Roman army obtained supplies from three zones: locally (either by the army or natives), within the Roman province of Britannia, or further afield in the Roman empire.
